– Purchasing the Smoke House –
In late 2018 Chris and I began flirting with the idea of selling our beloved Urban Farmhouse in the middle of Dallas/Fort Worth to purchase a home with a little bit of land. At first, I hated the idea of selling the home we poured our hearts into and moving to the outskirts of Dallas/Fort Worth – that would double my commute. AND, he was looking at homes that were basically in the middle of nowhere. However, in no time at all I started dreaming of what life could be living on an acre lot.
Y’all – I could do so much with an acre of land! I could have a proper garden. Pepper could run for days. We could, eventually, add a pool and an actual shop in the back yard. All the possibilities were running through my head. Plus, it had been two years since I had the ability to completely gut a house and remodel.
Within no time I was on board with the idea of finding a new place to call home. During our search we came across a grungy home on an acre of land. We were searching in a HOT market but this home had been sitting on the market for months. It was in a beautiful neighborhood that I would have never imagined I could afford, but it was a gross home that nobody wanted.
The owner did not take care of this house and he had smoked in it for years! When we went to view the house the smoke oder smacked us in the face before we even made it to the front porch. It was gross inside. The walls and ceilings were yellowed from years of smoke, everything was grungy and over cluttered, this house clearly hadn’t seen love in years. It was perfect.
I freaking LOVE buying homes that no one else wants. Purchasing an unwanted home allows me to start with a clean slate. This home was everything I was looking for. Unwanted, disgusting, and it was built in the 90s with excellent bones and foundation. Within a couple of months Chris and I moved in with all the animals in tow.
All of the work we put into this home we completed while living in the space and working full time. We constantly relocated from room to room while trying our best to out run the sheet rock dust and smoke oder. It’s been almost two years since we moved in and we are finally at a point to share our before and after journey with you all! While this house is (and probably always will be) a work in progress, I think the change is incredible.
